Lone Working Policy

Date Ratified: 24th March 2026

Frequency of Review by the trustees:- Every year (or when legislation changes)

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety of our members and volunteers when working alone in the theatre building. "Lone working" occurs when an individual has neither visual nor audible contact with another person.

2. General Principles

While we encourage a "buddy system" for all tasks, we recognize that solo visits for admin, wardrobe, or maintenance are sometimes necessary.

  • High-Risk activities are strictly prohibited while working alone.
  • The individual is responsible for their own safety and for following the check-in procedures.

3. Prohibited "Solo" Activities

The following tasks must never be performed alone due to the risk of serious injury:

  • Working at height (ladders, scaffolding).
  • Using heavy power tools or fixed machinery.
  • Moving heavy scenery or furniture.
  • Electrical work beyond changing a standard lightbulb.
  • Working while under the influence of alcohol or medication that causes drowsiness.

4. Risk Mitigation & Procedures

Before working alone, volunteers must adhere to the following:

STEP ACTION DETAILS
1. Notification Inform a Buddy Tell a designated contact (e.g., Stage Manager or family member) when you arrive and when you plan to leave.
2. SecurityLock the DoorsKeep external doors locked once inside to prevent unauthorized entry.
3. CommunicationPhone CheckEnsure your mobile phone is fully charged and has a signal in the area of the building where you'll be working.
4. Exit StrategyClear PathEnsure your path to the emergency exit is clear and you have a torch/phone light in case of a power cut.

5. Emergency Procedures

In the event of an accident or emergency:

  1. If able: Call 999 (or local emergency services) immediately.
  2. Location: Use the [Insert 'What3Words' or specific address] to guide services to the correct stage door or entrance.
  3. Fire: If the fire alarm sounds, evacuate immediately. Do not attempt to tackle a fire alone.

6. Incident Reporting

Any "near misses" or accidents that occur while working alone must be reported to the Company Manager within 24 hours, even if no injury occurred. This helps us improve the building's safety for everyone.

Note to Members: Your life is more important than a prop or a rehearsal schedule. If a task feels unsafe to do by yourself, stop and wait until help is available.
